Travel Photography | Alys Beach, FL Family Photo Session
I really love travel photography. Photography has really opened up opportunities for me that I never thought possible. I am thankful everyday that I get to work as a creative and composite new ideas with images both on film and digitally. I am allowed to travel, and I have been able to photograph some amazing locations. It pushes me creatively, and allows me to develop further in knowledge of light and my camera. Tech knowledge is a given but its far from “having a nice camera” or even knowing how to use it. If you have ever had a session with me I am basically a director. My style is posed yet unposed you could say. I already have the shots planned and creative ways of achieving my goal before I even start snapping. When I first started out as a photographer my introvert personality really overtook me. I basically chased kids down and didn’t give anyone any direction. As a result my images were lacking. I see this a lot with “documentary type” photographers. Granted, I have seen amazing documentary images but mainly because of the interaction with the photographer and his/her subjects, they interact much differently than just following someone around with a camera. Doing that you miss the interaction with the camera and essentially the connection with me and the results are lack luster. A good photographer directs. It makes everyone feel comfortable knowing predictability, and direction instead of being left vulnerable with a camera in your face wondering if you are doing the right thing. Now, I can’t direct everything, in fact, the best images are the ones I step back and just capture, but that only is allowed to happen after the connection is made with me first. When parents feel comfortable, and kids trust me. When I gain a child’s trust they are ready to show me their best moves. They are giving me eye contact and no parent coaxing is necessary, which is often harmful in itself by directing the child’s attention to Mom or Dad. This does several things: 1. Tells your child ignore me 2. I am not trustworthy 3. Puts me in a control battle that I refuse to engage in 4. Just upsets your kids by being at yet another place where Mom and Dad boss me (child) around and where they are going to rebel against that. Sessions should be fun, they capture love and personality, freckles, sillies, missing teeth, dance moves, hugs, and tenderness of heart. These things are even more important in travel sessions because there are no redos. (Travel Photography | Alys Beach, FL Family Photo Session | Whimsee Art Photography)
