The Power of a Personal Project | Roanoke VA Photographer | Whimsee Art Photography

The Power of a Personal Project

When choosing a photographer it is important to view their personal photography life. Checking out your photographer on Instagram is an excellent way to get a feel on how active they are pursuing their career. You shouldn’t hire a photographer who just has a “nice” camera and wants a little bonus money. You want a photographer who is deeply connected with his/her camera and has a clear vision of the story being told. When I first started my photography business I met a zillion other photographers. In fact, I quit telling people I did photography because it seemed everyone’s response was “Me Too!” or “Oh, I did that…” and they would go into their story. There are definitely a lot of photographer’s out there! I love it! Creatives bursting out at the seams. However, photography is a skill. It is expensive to learn, time consuming, technical, and often doesn’t pay much. When you are deciding between photographer’s look at their Instagram. Instagram is the platform for personal projects. A good creative sees the power of a personal project as a way to grow in their craft. It will overflow in each image they post. Social media provides a way for photographer’s to get recognized and show off their best work. When checking out your photographer and you see a bunch of i phone photos of nothing “special” or “thought out” chances are you will be disappointed with the end result and photos they deliver you as a client.

I debated on showing these photos. It’s from a personal project I did a few months ago. I shared a few shots on Instagram but thats kinda where I left it. This is my husband. I wanted to capture him the way he is, the way our Children will remember him. This is him at home, in his work clothes, in his office, with things that encompass him and who he is as a husband and father. He told me I couldn’t post these, but come on they are GOOD photography (plus he never reads my blog and hates photography)! He looks so handsome its like falling in love all over again for me. So here is an example of how good personal products can be for your creativity and your clients. Boaz’s 3 Month Session | Roanoke Baby Photographer | Whimsee Art Photography

Boaz’s 3 Month Session | Roanoke Baby Photographer

Wow! How 3 months has come and gone! When you have children that is really an understatement. I think every day ” I didn’t get enough of that teeny tiny newborn now he is huge!” or “I just want to sit here and stare at him but I have so many other things that have to be done.”  Yes, I am all about the whimsical aspect of children. From their tiny hands to their lumpy heads I am in love. How wonderful we are all created. 3 months is a wonderful milestone to document. Sleepy newborns are transformed into squishy rolls, picking up their heads to look around at the great big world around them. They are alert, cooing and smiling when people they love are near. Ah the magic of babies, thank you God for babies.

Moments We Were Blessed To Take Part In | Roanoke, VA Baby Photographer | Whimsee Art Photography

Moments We Were Blessed To Take Part In | Roanoke, VA Baby Photographer

We need photos because life is short and sweet… We have been given much through our children. As we pass along joy and laughter and build them up for this great big world, we need them just like they need us. Thank the Lord for his grace. It is our honor and duty to pray for them and may one day they be strong enough to pray for us. Photos of our children allow us to look back and reflect on the sweetness of moments we were blessed to take part in.

“I think it’s beautiful the way you sparkle when you talk about the things you love.” Atticus

The Heirloom Album | Roanoke VA Newborn Photographer | Whimsee Art Photography | www.whimseeart.com

The Heirloom Album

Two things I love, coffee and good photography! I spoke two posts back about printing your photos and the unreliability of storage devices. I have an update on that. My husband’s best friend came to stay with us 2 weeks ago. He mentioned his old hard drive, full of all his old memories, had completely died and how disappointing it was to loose all his old photos. This is reality. We live in a digital age where posting the best photo on social media is a big deal, but here’s the thing, people like it for ONE day. ONE day, thats all you get. However, when your photos are printed they last a lifetime, for generations who will never have Facebook, twitter or instagram. This is the Heirloom Album. It holds all of your session’s photos, you can look through it day after day with out fear of it being deleted. It is a luxe linen album with lay flat pages.

Welcoming Baby Joseph | Roanoke Newborn Photographer | Whimsee Art Photography

Welcoming Baby Joseph | In Home Newborn Session

When I first met Ali, we attended church together. Her family had just moved back to the States after living a short time in London for her husband, Patrick’s job. I remember thinking…WOW how cool and exciting! Ali originally contacted me about coming to the hospital when Joseph was born to snap a few photos of her older children meeting their baby brother for the first time. Joseph had other plans. Refusing to enter the world in a timely manner Ali had to be induced which made recovery a bit more exhausting. We decided it best to reschedule our session until a few days after the birth so everyone felt relaxed and comfortable in their home. Although I didn’t capture those first few moments of the siblings meeting Joseph, you would never know it. I was greeted at the door by children bursting with excitement of their new baby brother! They were literally fighting over who would hold him in the pictures. It was so wonderful to see children welcome a new baby with such joy. They were all so proud of him. Ali helped the kids make a beautiful mobile of star cutouts hanging over his bassinet to remind him to look up toward the heavens. The star theme was so fitting for this little guy. He was surrounded by such love and truly shone in the midst of everyone. This in home newborn session captures the true beauty of adding a new life to the family.

Patrick and Ali, thank you for letting me photograph your sweet new baby and beautiful family.
